Sierra Vista Sponsored Launch Winners Announced

The University of Arizona Center for Innovation (UACI) is excited to announce OncoNexus and Sonoran Robotics as the winners for the UACI Sponsored Launch Fueled by the City of Sierra Vista and the Sky Islands Foundation. With a start date in August, founders received a one-year sponsored entry into UACI which includes the people, place and programming needed to successfully grow and scale their businesses.  


Both startups offer innovative AI-based solutions for challenges in the healthcare industry. OncoNexus is building a dual output ambient AI platform for cancer patients. Sonoran Robotics is developing software that can detect dangerous falls among older adults using AI in conjunction with Apple’s body tracking vision framework in real-time.  


By joining UACI’s incubator program, they will gain structured mentorship, guidance on infrastructure planning, plus funding and valuable connections to industry and community leaders.  

 

Regional Partnership in Action

UACI Executive Director Casey Carrillo recently participated in the American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico "Extend Your Reach" event, co-hosted by Pima County Economic Development and the City of Tucson. Casey shared UACI’s programming and its role in driving forward cutting-edge research and advanced technology in the region. The gathering brought together business leaders, government officials, and academic partners from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border to explore cross-border collaboration and innovation.   

 

Big Investment for Macula Vision Systems 

DxPx Capital, a business angel network focused on diagnostics, digital health, and life science tools, is now the lead investor in UACI startup client Macula Vision Systems. When announcing the investment, DxPx Capital shared, “This breakthrough platform has the potential to transform infectious disease diagnostics through speed, accuracy, and scalability - an innovation long overdue in clinical microbiology.” Congratulations to the Macula team— UACI looks forward to their continued growth.  

 

New Tech Conference in Arizona

Governor Hobbs and the Arizona Commerce Authority, in partnership with the Arizona Venture Alliance, announced Arizona Tech Week, the state’s first-ever decentralized tech conference. Arizona Tech Week will bring together tech luminaries, investors, founders, and startup leaders for a week of lively keynotes, panels, social networking engagements, pitch competitions, and exclusive Arizona experiences. The event will take place in locations across the state from April 6 -12, 2026.  

 

Funding Opportunity for Student Innovators

VentureWell is now accepting applications for its E-Team Program. If you’re part of a student team developing an invention that will make a positive impact on a large-scale social, health, or environmental challenge, you could receive up to $25,000 in funding, mentorship, and network-building opportunities. The deadline to apply is September 30.

This innovative resource will not only support the growth of science and tech startups in Southern Arizona, but also help other regions jump-start their startup ecosystems. US Air Tech 

UACI startup client US Air Tech develops cost-effective satcom technologies to address critical challenges of emerging wireless communications systems. Their antenna system, STELLA (SATCOM Technology of Elaborate Luneburg Lens Antenna), has achieved several milestones contributing to the success of their venture. Selected as a finalist for TechConnect’s Space Innovation Challenge, they’ll be taking the stage on August 27-29 in National Harbor, MD to compete for the $100k prize pool.

Join Startup Tucson for their virtual introductory course as the perfect starting point to get going with a new product, service or idea. Whether you are early on and just tinkering with an idea or already in business and want to explore a pivot or refresh on the basics, this workshop will introduce tools and resources you can use no matter where you are on your entrepreneurial journey. This virtual workshop will take place on Wednesday, August 20 from 3 - 5 pm. 

 

Optics Valley Presents: AI for Small Business Workshop

Presented by Arizona Technology Council’s Optics Valley and Brian Bridge Labs in partnership with Pima Community College’s (PCC) Southern Arizona Technology & Entrepreneurship Center (SATEC), this 4-hour workshop will teach practical and actionable AI strategies for your venture. The in-person workshop will take place at the PCC Downtown Campus on Wednesday, August 20 from 1 – 5 pm.
